The Cure for Pain

This afternoon when I picked Tyler up from daycare, I asked how his day was and how he was feeling. (He was a little sick over the weekend.) He proceeded to tell me his foot hurt. “My foot hurts really bad. It hurts sooooo much.” Me: “Looks fine to me. You’re not even limping or anything.” Ty: “No, Mom, it really hurts. It’s not cut or bruised or anything. It just really hurts. You know, ice cream will make it better.”

Of course ice cream will make it better.

First Day of School

And just like that, summer vacation is over. Feels like just yesterday we went on our trip to Orlando which was at the start of summer vacation.

The kids were excited to go to school today. Both of them woke up before David and I did, in part because I forgot to adjust the alarm back to an earlier time. Tyler was excited because his 5th grade teacher is the same as the one Nat had (Mrs. Kondo). They think she is the “best” 5th grade teacher there. Nat was excited to find out about her classes. She was anxious to know if she got into advanced math — which she did! That’s my girl!

Here’s to 5th and 7th grade!

Their friends Andrew and Alyssa joined us this morning to go to school together

Let’s Dig

The kids decided to dig a (deep) hole this week in the backyard. They wanted to dig a hole just for fun, but also to bury a time capsule. Not sure what they were planning to put inside. This kept them busy for awhile and I was impressed at how deep they got it.

Yosemite

It was a Chiu family vacation this past weekend in Yosemite. We rented a house in La Grange at Lake Don Pedro which was about 45 minutes outside of Yosemite National Park. The house was big with lots of beds, but the place had musty air and was a bit out-dated, but also walking distance to the lake. It was a hot weekend and hot and crowded in Yosemite! A tip: don’t go on a Saturday in the summer. We spent a bulk of our time in the car in bumper to bumper traffic trying to get to different areas within the park. My hope was to see the falls, especially since we had El Nino, but there was barely a trickle coming down the mountain side. We’ll have to find another time to go again and really experience Yosemite.

We stopped at Cathedral Beach inside Yosemite for a picnic lunch and everyone dipped in the water.

El Capitan

Lower Yosemite falls. Barely any water, so the kids went rock climbing in here instead.

On Sunday morning, Tyler woke up at the crack of dawn with Uncle Way and the two of them walked to the lake to go fishing. Tyler caught several large bass. In all, they caught (and released) 12 fish!

Canoeing in Foster City

We spent Sunday with both of my brothers. It’s been awhile since the 3 of us have been together. Even recent holidays, one of us is usually missing. I think the last time we were all together, it was Thanksgiving in Vegas and prior to that, who knows.

Uncle Way and family spent the night on Saturday since they were coming back from LA and arrived late. We had brunch together on Sunday and then the kids hung out and went swimming. Then, we went over to Big’s house so the kids can ride in his canoe. He lives in San Mateo right on the border of Foster City and his backyard backs into one of the Foster City lagoons. It’s a really nice backyard!
